Yes, THAT Negativland!
KZAX 94.9 FM is thrilled to bring renowned multimedia art collective Negativland to the Pacific Northwest for a live broadcast, one-time performance at Radio Forever. Described in Washington Post as “musical collage pioneers... genre-defying, densely layered, strangely accessible,” the band is known for transforming sound and images into layered audiovisual collage.
Negativland coined the term “culture jamming” to describe their method of remixing found media. Since the early 1980s, they have used this approach to “pose both serious and silly questions about the nature of sound, media, control, ownership, propaganda, power, and perception in the United States of America,” according to Negativland’s website. In collaboration with KZAX 94.9 FM, Pickford Film Center will be screening “Stand By For Failure: A Documentary About Negativland” directed by Ryan Worsley on Aug 7th, followed by a Q&A with the band.
On the Radio Forever stage, Negativland will be supported by djs from KZAX, Bellingham-based garage punk band Cat Valley, and Seattle’s “Undisputed Autistic King of Hustle,” rapper and filmmaker Fantasy A. Inside Make.Shift, Radio Forever Festival attendees can explore a gallery exhibit featuring interactive installations by local artists and vintage radio technology on loan from the Whatcom Museum and SPARK Museum of Electrical Invention. The alley will be activated with large-scale, radio-themed outdoor installations by Seattle’s KitBash Studio.
